Austin Richards has been standing inside lightning bolts at Burning Man since 1998.
A particle physicist with a PhD from UC Berkeley, he built his first Faraday suit in 1997 — constructed from a birdcage, heating duct, and flexible dryer duct — and Dr. MegaVolt was born. Performing with a double Tesla coil mounted on a truck and generating 40-foot arcs of electricity at up to one million volts, Dr. MegaVolt is one of Black Rock City's most iconic and longest-running art acts.
