Burning Man had never canceled Black Rock City before 2020 — then COVID-19 made the call unavoidable. On April 10, 2020, organizers scrapped the in-person event but refused to drop that year's already-chosen theme, The Multiverse, instead leaning into it for a ticketed online gathering they called Virtual Black Rock City.

For a community built on showing up in the dust together, burning from home stung — and gallows humor became how a lot of Burners got through it.
