Cargo Cult was created by Merv Ellstrom and contributed by Steven Fritz for the 2013 Burning Man event, named directly for that year's official theme — inspired by the real historical phenomenon in which some Pacific Island communities built ritual imitations of Western cargo infrastructure after World War II, hoping to summon the material abundance that had arrived with soldiers.
